On 19th and 20th June Montserrat Jané shared her expert knowledge through a 2 day on-line session as part of a course organised by the Patent Centre of the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO). The course is made up of several modules that deal in specific fields such as software, biotechnology and biomedicine and chemistry and pharmacy, each module being adaptable to the needs of the attendees. The course as a whole aims to provide a solid theoretical, practical overview of the international patent system, encompassing aspects such as drafting, patentability, infringement and documentation.

Montserrat imparted the Chemistry and Pharmacy module where she handled questions related to patents in these sectors, especially in the E.U. and the U.S.A. She covered issues such as how to protect and how to evaluate the risk of infringement of patents in these fields as well as other specific issues such as extensions of patent protection, data exclusivity, and the experimental exception.

With over 12 years of experience in R&D in a pharmaceutical company, where she was responsible for patents, Montserrat provided invaluable insight into the chemical industry with practical pointers and a ‘hands on’ approach. As well as being a senior partner at ZBM Patents & Trademarks, she is also an esteemed European patent agent and expert in oppositions and appeals of European patents.
